Training Ease for Puppies, Older Dogs and Problem Dogs (And Their Humans!)

Got some challenging dog (and human) clients? Did you know that the way we train dogs can be very useful in training the people we surround ourselves with including our clients, staff, and even our partners! You’ll also learn about the biggest mistakes dog trainers and owners make when they are working with their dogs. Take a seat with Ian Dunbar and Kristin (in Ian’s backyard!) as he shares his secrets for dog (and human!) training success.

Important note: Ian kindly hosted this interview in his backyard (Kristin lives fairly close to him and he preferred to be interviewed in person). Because this segment was filmed in the great outdoors, you will notice some nature sounds when you watch this video. Specifically... the sound of a crow that wouldn't stop crowing for about 10 minutes (it does fly away eventually, thank goodness!) and there is also some wind noise during a few moments of the video. Though we cannot (alas!) control nature and its noises, we do apologize for the sound disturbances at particular moments of this segment. We do hope that you will enjoy this video and Ian's extensive knowledge about dogs and dog behavior.

Dr. Ian Dunbar

In This Segment You Will Learn:

  • Suggestions that pet business owners can give their clients who will be getting a new puppy
  • Tips for the first few pre-puppy and post-puppy weeks
  • Discover what is most required when teaching your dog a new behavior or trick
  • How to best deal with aggressive or shy dogs
  • The simplest (and most fun!) trick to teach your pet
  • And much more!

Kristin - MUSINGSKristin’s Musings:

So many of you from last year’s conference asked to see Dr. Ian Dunbar again at this year’s conference, and he was happy to oblige! Ever heard of the expression “cheeky monkey”? That’s Ian. He’s a rascal! I never knew what was going to fly out of his mouth which makes him very fun to interview… and, I will admit, a little nerve-wracking! Ian’s a generous soul who made himself available to all of us pet business owners in the midst of his extremely busy travel schedule. (Thank you, Ian.)

Please note:  I interviewed Ian in his backyard (he lives fairly close to me), and that’s why this video format is a little different than the others. That’s also why you will hear a crow cawing for the first 10 minutes or so! Ahhh….nature! Given time, I’m sure Ian could have trained that crow not to interrupt us while we were taping this segment, but alas, Ian is a busy guy and the show must go on (in spite of the crow). So…please forgive the nature noises. If you do, watching this will be worth it, I promise. On another note: many people think “OH MY GOD, IAN DUNBAR!” and he is all that (and even more). He’s also a really kind, down-to-earth guy who knows how to treat people and dogs with love and respect. What a guy!

This video is viewable for ONLY 24 hours:
